Medicine and Surgery get moving with 10-week step counting challenge

On Jan. 8, the Department of Medicine and Department of Surgery will begin a 10-week competition to see which department can move the most in 2018.

The competition is part of Duke's annual Get Moving Challenge, the 10-week wellness challenge in which participants can compete in up to three areas to log the most steps, exercise minutes, and/or weight loss. The chairs of Medicine and Surgery are asking their departments to participate in the steps category. During the program, HR will average the steps walked by people in each department so we can determine whether Surgery or Medicine is moving the most.

You can register and count your steps Jan. 8 through March 9, 2018.

Follow these steps to get started

  1. Register for the Get Moving Challenge at hr.duke.edu/getmoving
  2. Join a team in your department - each division in Medicine and in Surgery should have at least one team already started, or form a new one (Department-Division-TeamName, i.e. Medicine-Endocrinology-SaladSpinners).
  3. Pick up a free pedometer (see distribution schedule at https://hr.duke.edu/wellness/get-moving/pedometer) or use your mobile device.
  4. Get moving.
  5. Keep track of your own progress by entering your results online daily (or use the paper tracking sheet at https://hr.duke.edu/sites/default/files/atoms/files/Get%20Moving%20Tracker.pdf)
