New GIM Faculty Spotlight: Jennifer St Clair-Russell, PhD

Jennifer St Clair-Russell, PhD, joined our division in September. To get to know her a little more, we asked her the following questions:

Where do you work?
My office is on the 5th floor of the NC Mutual Building.

What is your title?
Medical Instructor

What are your interests are in the field?
Patient/provider communication, specifically regarding treatment options, including conservative management in renal failure

Are you involved in research?
I am currently working on a R03 research project entitled, "Using Mixed Methods to Explore Barriers and Facilitators to Nephrologist-Initiated Discussions about Palliative Care". This project transferred with me and I have one year to go on it!

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
I like to travel, eat good food, and take lots of pictures; I have been a member of a nature photography club in the past and would like to join one here. My husband and I have a goal to visit each of the 50 states. He only has 4 to go, but I have a few more than that. We have toyed with the idea of an RV road trip across the country with our dog, a mini schnauzer, Ella.

What brought you to Duke?
Dr. Ebony Boulware and her amazing research. I worked with Ebony when I worked at the American Kidney Fund and have kept in touch with her.

Any recent book you've read?
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Fun Facts:

I love dogs, especially mini-schnauzers; My husband and I are also big Washington Capitals fans (hockey) [as you can see in the photo to the right]
I was very active in choir/theater in high school and my favorite role was Lucy in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. I have been known to pull out my “acting hat” to do role-plays, etc. (See proof of her acting here)
I worked for 15 years before I decided to return to school and pursue my PhD.
