Just a few years ago, Dr. Bruce Peyser was a chief resident in the primary care track within the Internal Medicine program at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. As happens to many chief residents, he worked closely with the housestaff and attendings, and spent quite a bit of time teaching those around him. Back then, clinician-educators typically came to the teaching sessions with copies of relevant articles that were handed out to the learners and housestaff. These articles were stored in a four drawer file cabinet in the chief resident's office, and by years end, it was jammed with a number of high yield articles, many of which were review articles.
Primary Care Articles of Interest
Dr. Peyser has adopted this approach to the 21rst century by collating comparable high yield recent review articles that he distributes to colleagues, housestaff, and students. He does this by reading a lot, and every two weeks, collecting the articles into a format that allows for easy distribution to colleagues within the Duke health system. Currently over 160 individuals are on the listserv. This is open to anyone who is currently employed at Duke, and if you might interested in subscribing, you can sign up here.
Duke Primary Care Teaching Academy
Additionally, once a month, a series of important articles about teaching are collected and these are sent out to a second cohort of over sixty individuals who are enrolled in a Teaching Academy of primary care providers who teach in the outpatient setting. Most of these individuals work within Duke Primary Care, but anyone can join this group who works at Duke. Click here to subscribe.
The Teaching Academy was established in order to provide some support for the clinician educators within Duke Primary Care. A Teaching Academy website was created by Dr. Peyser, and again, this is open and available to anyone within the Duke community. You can access the site here.
