Duke University, including the School of Medicine and School of Nursing, will extend the severe weather and emergency conditions policy until 6 a.m. Friday, but Duke University Health System (DUHS) will return to a normal schedule at noon Thursday to ensure continuity of care for patients. Pearls from 1/12/21 Medicine LEADS

The Jan. 12, 2021 session of Duke Medicine LEADS featured Ada Gregory, MA, associate director at the Kenan Institute for Ethics, presenting "Bystander Intervention: Microinterventions to Respond to Bias in Clinical Care."

Here are pearls and takeaways from the session:

  1. Incivility is a continuum which may include bias and harassment. 
  2. Bystander intervention resets community norms by communicating to current and new members:
    1. Harassment, discrimination and incivility will not be tolerated in this community. 
    2. Everyone is expected to do their part.
  3. Patients can also be a source of bias and discrimination, particularly towards learners. This article shares the twelve tips for responding to microaggressions and overt discrimination when the patient offends the learner.
