Pickett Road looks at the impact of food choices

Pickett Road Clinic decided to have a little lunchtime experiment last week. They provided their staff with a free lunch consisting of 1/2 of a beef burger and 1/2 of a plant-based burger.

"We have quite a few folks who have not yet begun to appreciate vegetarian food, so we are hoping this might open some eyes," says Dr. Bruce Peyser, Director of Education and Teaching for Duke Primary Care.

Which wich?

After enjoying their meal, they were asked to decide which sandwich was meat and which was meatless. Of the 10 people that voted, 8 correctly were able to select the beef containing sandwich while two were fooled.

"Our clinic is definitely becoming more aware of some of the impact of our food choices and how this affects the environment."

"Our clinic is definitely becoming more aware of some of the impact of our food choices and how this affects the environment," says Dr. Peyser.  "We had some discussion about how if everyone ate one less hamburger a week, that this would be the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road for a year."

What about plastic?

The Pickett Road Clinic is also working to reduce the amount of plastic that is involved in meal transport and consumption for their providers and many are working to not use plastic at all. Now, most are using their own coffee cups and reusable utensils to help reduce plastic waste.
