David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Rheumatology and Immunology) and Michael Hershfield, MD, professor of medicine (Rheumatology and Immunology) have been designated as Masters of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).
"This award represents an important honor in our specialty and recognizes career achievement," said Dr. Pisetsky.
Pisetsky and Hershfield have spent their entire careers at Duke.

"We want to thank all of our colleagues in the Department of Medicine for providing a terrific environment that promotes outstanding patient care and academic excellence," said Hershfield. "There are probably few academic centers whose rheumatology division involves a major role of two ACR Masters in the clinical, teaching and research programs. This is a great distinction for our division and we are delighted to have had the opportunity to work at such a wonderful institution."
[box]Recognition as a Master of the American College of Rheumatology is one of the highest honors the College bestows. The designation of Master is conferred on ACR members, age 65 or older by October 1 of the year in which they are nominated, who have made outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology through scholarly achievement and/or service to their patients, students, and profession. This honor is usually bestowed upon no more than 15 members per year.[/box]
Pisetsky and Hershfield will be honored at the ACR's annual scientific meeting in October in Chicago.
Deborah Kredich, MD and Ralph Snyderman, MD, Bill Kelley and Jim Wyngaarden previously received this recognition from the ACR.
