Save the date 1/17/20: Damon Tweedy, MD, to give Martin Luther King Jr. Medicine Grand Rounds

Damon Tweedy, MDThe Department of Medicine Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee and has announced that Damon Tweedy, MD, author of "Black Man in a White Coat," will give the Martin Luther King Jr. Medicine Grand Rounds presentation on Jan. 17, 2020 in the Searle Center Lecture Hall.

Dr. Tweedy will present "Reflections on Race and Medicine."

Tweedy is is an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University School of Medicine and a staff psychiatrist within the Durham Veteran Affairs Health Care System. He completed both medical school and his specialty training at Duke. 

Tweedy divides his time between the Durham VA Health Care System and Duke. Within the VA system, he directs a team of mental health providers working in integrated primary care clinics. At the medical school, he teaches a behavioral health seminar for second-year students interested in primary care and other outpatient-focused training. He also is a small group leader for the Clinical Skills Foundation course, which introduces students to basic and advanced aspects of the doctor-patient relationship.

Tweedy has written extensively about the intersection of race and medicine, both in academic journals and in popular print publications. His 2015 book, "Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine," made the New York Times bestseller list and was selected by TIME Magazine as a top non-fiction book that year. He has traveled to medical schools, teaching hospitals, and undergraduate campuses throughout the nation to discuss his book and its relevance to doctors and patients alike.
