Schulman speaks before Energy & Commerce Committee about healthcare consolidation

GIM Professor of Medicine and healthcare economist, Kevin Schulman, MD, MBA, was invited by the Energy and Commerce Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives to be a witness during an investigative hearing about the growing experience of healthcare consolidation. This hearing entitled,  “Examining the Impact of Health Care Consolidation,” took place Wednesday, February 15, in Washington, DC, with the purpose of examining consolidation trends in the health care sector, the reasons behind those trends, and the effects these have on the cost and quality of care.

Martin Gaynor, PhD, Professor of Economics and Health Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and Leemore Dafny, PhD, Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, also gave testimony at this hearing. Dafny and Gaynor focused on the economic studies of the impact to provide consolidation on prices, while Schulman focused on the negative impacts of consolidation on the innovation in health care markets.
