Schulman’s JAMA Viewpoint

Kevin Schulman, MD, is a renowned clinical researcher and faculty member of Duke general internal medicine. Last week’s issue (August 16, 2016) of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows Dr. Schulman as an author of a Viewpoint article titled “Reassessing ACOs and Health Care Reform.” The co-author, Barak D. Richman, JD, is a colleague of Schulman’s from Duke Law.

The paper argues against Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). They reason that healthcare delivery needs to move away from the costly infrastructure of hospitals and toward more sustainable platforms. The viewpoint states “Such an approach may be more effective and much more cost effective for Medicare than to continue building upon a costly hospital infrastructure that clearly is moving the health care system in the wrong economic direction.”
