This past Tuesday, November 27, first and second year Duke medical students stayed at the medical school into the evening to get a chance to talk to faculty from across the department at the Medicine Research Student-Faculty Mixer. The event was hosted by the Department of Medicine and the Duke Careers in Internal Medicine Interest Group (CIMIGro). Faculty from several divisions, including GIM, were present and engaged in animated conversations with students about shared passions in research. Topics ranged from advocacy, to disparities research to bench research in a range of disciplines. Students bubbled over with enthusiasm as they considered the many prospects for research as they plan for their third year research experience. It was great to see this level of engagement from Duke students so early in their professional lives.

Dr. Cooney, Chair of the Department of Medicine, welcomed the group. Dr. Matt Sparks, Director of Undergraduate Medical Research and faculty in Nephrology, led the event with help from the CIMIgro co-chairs. This is the second year the event was held. The history of connecting students to faculty leading to productive research projects, and great turn-out this evening hold great promise. Students were tasked with finding faculty members at the beginning of the mixer by delivering their name badge to them. This allowed students and faculty to develop new connections.
GIM Research on Display
Diverse research interests were included. Highlighted GIM research included Dr. Kevin Shah’s history of mentoring MS3s, Dr. Alex Cho’s projects on care redesign, and Dr. Kelli Allen’s work on behavioral and health services interventions.
About Sharma
Dr. Sharma is involved in a variety of educational roles at Duke, especially with the training program for Physician Assistants (PA). She is also the Director of Hospital Medicine Clinical Education at Duke Regional Hospital. Dr. Sharma has won multiple awards for her educational excellence, including the 2018 Duke AHEAD Rising Star Award and the 2018 GIM Educational Excellence Award
