A case study co-authored by Dr. David Simel, Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chair for Veterans Affairs, appeared this month in "JAMA Diagnostic Test Interpretation", a series in quiz format showing a patient’s clinical presentation and test result(s).
The authors discuss a 62-year-old woman with a 10-year history of hypertension who presents with an elevated serum creatinine and abnormal urinalysis.
The series asks the reader how to best interpret a diagnostic test. The main thrust of the article is to explain how the test is interpreted along with a discussion of what the test measures, its limitations, and if there are better testing strategies for the patient’s clinical problems. It aims to provide information for all JAMA readers, ranging from medical students to experienced clinicians. Tests discussed in this series are used to evaluate common clinical conditions.
