Sloan and Der promoted to Assistant Professor

Congratulations to Drs. Caroline Sloan and Tatyana Der for their promotions to Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, effective October 1, 2021.

Caroline Sloan, MD - Clinician-Researcher

Dr. Sloan joined DGIM faculty earlier this year after the completion of a two-year HSR&D research fellowship (interspersed with a chief resident year). She is a researcher, primary care physician at the Duke Outpatient Clinic, as well as a hospitalist at Duke Regional Hospital. Dr Sloan has evaluated the effects that Medicare payment reform has had on the way dialysis organizations provide care to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). She has co-authored a review and has collaborated on several qualitative and survey-based projects whose objectives are to understand how physicians talk about costs with their patients.


Tatyana Der, MD - Hospitalist, Duke Raleigh Hospital

Dr. Der is a full time Hospitalist at Duke Raleigh Hospital. In this setting, she frequently interacts with house officers and other trainees. Dr. Der strives to grow personally and professionally and has attended numerous development courses and training programs.  She has been successful in Duke Health System’s initiatives to address opioid epidemic and improve patient’s care and safety. She joined DUHS Opioid Safety Taskforce soon after she joined Duke Raleigh Hospitalist team in 2017. She then became a leader of DRaH Opioid Taskforce and helped to address compliance with Joint Commission standards on pain assessment and management. Dr. Der has done research in evaluating patient’s outcomes who were treated with Ketamine infusions for pain. She has become a collaborator of Duke PROMIS LAB to further research in pain relief and opioid mitigation.  Der helps conduct COVID-19 related clinical trials (ACTIV-1 and ACTIV-3) at DRAH as sub-investigator and has been acknowledged by NIH for this work.
