The School of Medicine Office for Faculty Development is now accepting applications for the ALICE program – a leadership development program for mid-career women faculty in the School of Medicine. ALICE – Academic Leadership, Innovation, and Collaborative Engagement –provides in-depth opportunities for leadership skill development, personal reflection and goal setting, peer-mentoring, and structured 360 feedback. The program aims to address the widely recognized gap in the number of women in senior leadership positions in academic medicine by providing a tailored leadership development opportunity for women.
Program Overview: This 10-month program includes a combination of full-day, half-day, and 1-2-hour sessions. Content focuses on personal leadership skills designed to help individuals gain greater self-awareness, management, and communication skills needed to deftly navigate leadership in academic medicine. Sessions will include:
- An intensive all-day Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) training focused on of how to manage interactions with diverse personality types
- 360 Assessment, including a workshop with an experienced Executive Coach to develop an action plan
- Negotiation workshop led by a national expert in the field
- Unconscious bias workshop
- Financial literacy seminars
- Opportunities to interact with and learn from executive leaders at Duke
Faculty will engage with outside leadership experts and will set and refine personal development goals as part of their participation in the program.

Who should apply: ALICE is targeted toward mid-career women faculty. It is expected that most applicants will be associate or recently-promoted full professors, however, others will also be considered in special circumstances. Underrepresented minority women faculty are especially encouraged to apply. The most competitive applicants will have a new or impending leadership role.
This program is designed to complement the national ELAM fellowship, to which Duke typically sends up to 1 faculty member per year.
Application and Selection Process: Participants will be competitively selected. The application is online and requests the following information:
- Basic demographic information
- CV/NIH Biosketch
- Short essay describing why the applicant would like to participate in the ALICE program (<300 words)
- Letter of nomination from the applicant’s department chair, division chief, or center/institute director
- Commitment to attend all core program meetings (click here for dates)

Cost: Participation in the 10-month program costs $2,250. Payment can be made via departmental fund code transfer or via personal check. This one-time payment will be used to cover all program expenses including the cost of the MBTI and 360 instruments, speaker fees, facility costs, and program evaluation.
