SoM introduces new tool for investigators: Mousebase@Duke

By admin2
The School of Medicine is pleased to introduce Mousebase@Duke, a new user-populated online database of research mouse model strains used and maintained by Duke investigators. The new mouse strain database can be found at http://mousebase.duke.edu. The goal of this tool, open to all Duke University faculty, is to foster collaboration between research groups by providing a simple, but robust system for sharing experimental mouse information between investigators across the institution. Developed at the request of many Duke researchers, this new tool will enable investigators to search locally available mouse models using a number of criteria. As of January 2014, Duke investigators will be required to enter information about their mouse strains in Mousebase@Duke upon renewal of their IACUC protocols. Investigators will submit and manage their strains using a basic web form. The data entry process is not onerous. Researchers will need to enter only minimal information about their strains. Individuals who would like additional information about a particular mouse strain will be asked to contact the owner of the strain directly. Investigators are not required to share mouse strains with other investigators although sharing is encouraged if appropriate. Investigators can indicate whether they wish to share their strains when they enter strain data. This new tool is an effort to keep a searchable, current record of mouse strains on campus. With Mousebase@Duke, researchers can increase the efficiency of their research by minimizing the time and cost associated with developing mouse models that may already be available here at Duke. The database is protected and is for internal Duke use only. Individuals wishing to search the database must use their NetID and password. Databases are only as good as the information found in them. Without active participation and updating, this tool will not be useful to all, so we ask for your participation and cooperation.
