Mary Klotman, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine, announced the appointment of E. William St. Clair, MD, to the position of chief of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, effective immediately.
"Bill has served as interim chief of the division since 2007, and his understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by the department as a whole makes him the right leader for the division for the years ahead," said Klotman.
When he considers the former chiefs of the division – going back to 1954 and including William Kelley, Ralph Snyderman, Bart Haynes, and David Pisetsky – St. Clair is humbled by their record of impressive accomplishments.
“They have set a high bar,” he said.
A graduate of Duke University (A.B. in chemistry), Bill earned his M.D. from the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship here at Duke, served as chief resident from 1984-1985, and has been a member of the faculty since 1985. He investigates the pathogenesis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, primary Sjögren’s syndrome, and systemic vasculitis using patient-oriented research methodologies in collaboration with basic scientists and other clinical investigators, and he is the author or co-author of more than 140 publications.
