By wja3@duke.edu
Welcome to our first Staff Spotlight. In this recurring series, we’ll take a look at the Division staff who work with our faculty to make sure the Division of General Internal Medicine stays up and running. This week, we talk to Division Administrator Lisa Wright. Lisa WrightHow long have you been at Duke? How long have you been at the Division? I started at Duke in December, 1985. I started with GIM in August 2012. What does your work as Division Administrator entail? What does a typical day look like for you? Each day in GIM is different. I spend most of my time working on the financial aspects of the division. I am also responsible for all Human Resource aspects which include the hiring, transfer or termination process as well as staff and labor relation issues. What do you enjoy most about working at the Division? I love working with the financial aspect of the division and ensuring the faculty have enough administrative support in order to carry out their research. What did you do before coming to the Division? I worked in many positions at Duke prior to coming to GIM. From 2000 to 2012, I worked in the Division of Cellular Therapy/Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic as their Financial Analyst as well as their grant manager. I was responsible for all sponsored research financial activities and supervised the grants administration staff. What’s one thing that you like to do when you’re not at Duke? I love spending time with my grown children, husband, and my granddaughter Laci, who is 16 months old. I also like to work in my flower garden and take trips to the beach whenever time permits. I also spend a lot of time working towards obtaining my Masters in Healthcare Administration. What do you plan on doing once you get you get your master’s degree? I  plan to stay here. I believe that my MHA will benefit my current position, especially in the clinical area of GIM. I am learning a great deal about healthcare in a broad aspect so it will benefit me in all areas of my current work.
