Steven Sumner, MD, global health and internal medicine resident, recently received news that he would be participating in the 2012-2013 Fogarty Global Health Fellowship, which provides 10 months of supportive mentorship, research opportunities and a collaborative research environment for residents and fellows to enhance their global health research expertise and their careers. Sumner will conduct research in Moshi, Tanzania, where Duke currently has a hospital-based partnership with the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. Dr. Sumner traveled to Tanzania as part of the Duke Global Health Residency/Fellowship Pathway. In Tanzania, he drafted a proposal to study road traffic injury prevention. “I’m thrilled about the Fogarty Fellowship opportunity because it gives me the chance to learn new research techniques for population health interventions and to do projects that simply wouldn’t be possible if I didn’t have this support," said Sumner. "I really want to get deep into understanding the community where I will be working and explore health from multiple angles." Residents and fellows interested in applying for the fellowship can contact Cecelia Pezdek, the program coordinator at Duke, for more information.
