Supporting Durham's Partners for Youth Opportunity

Partners for Youth OpportunityThis holiday season, the Department of Medicine is asking for your help to support Durham children and families. Now through Dec. 14, 2019, we're kicking off a department-wide giving campaign and ask you to consider making a donation to Partners for Youth Opportunity (PYO), a local nonprofit organization in our community.

Partners for Youth Opportunity provides Durham youth with opportunities to connect, develop, and contribute through mentoring, employment, and educational support. Twenty-eight percent of Durham youth are living in poverty, and Partners for Youth Opportunity is working to bridge the opportunity gap that many of these families face. By providing resources, opportunities, and recognizing potential, PYO helps to ensure families living in poverty, immigrant families, and families with incarcerated members have access to the tools to successfully contribute to the community.

Children deserve the chance to go to college, find a job and follow their dreams, become an engineer, a teacher, or even a future scientist or doctor. PYO students have been placed in internships at Lincoln Community Health Center, and several students attend City of Medicine Academy, which focuses on preparing youth for jobs in healthcare fields.

"We care for patients every day at Duke and extending that care beyond the walls of the hospital to support our community is critical. Partners in Youth Opportunity helps children and families in Durham every day. Whether you are here long term or not, engaging and connecting with those in our community through organizations like PYO provides meaningful opportunities for us all," said Kathleen Cooney, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine.

Every dollar goes a long way and supports scholarship, workforce training, college visits, and more. Partners for Youth Opportunity is supported through Duke University's Doing Good in the Neighborhood year-round campaign.

When making a donation, be sure to include "Duke Dept of Medicine" in the Comments line.

Thank you in advance for your support.
