Dean Nancy Andrews sent the following announcement to School of Medicine faculty, staff and students:
Kevin Thomas, MD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Disease, has been named Assistant Dean for Underrepresented Faculty Development for the School of Medicine.
In this new role, Dr. Thomas will work closely with the School’s Office for Faculty Development and Office of Diversity and Inclusion to foster activities that promote academic success for faculty underrepresented in academic medicine. He will develop and lead programs that augment the environment for diversity and inclusion. This will include creating a mentorship network, developing research and training seminars, hosting invited speakers, creating faculty and training recruitment programs, and establishing colloquia to gather the Duke community of scholars.
Dr. Thomas currently serves as Director of Faculty Diversity and Health Disparities Research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI), Associate Director of the Duke CTSA TL-1 scholars program, Co-director of the Duke Health Disparities Research curriculum, and is a Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council for Underrepresented Minority (URM) Faculty.
A clinical cardiac electrophysiologist, Dr. Thomas received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology fellowships at Duke University Medical Center and served as chief resident in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Thomas is well-published in the field of racial and ethnic differences in cardiovascular care delivery and outcomes. His passion and commitment to eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in cardiovascular care and outcomes is reflected in his research focus and mentoring of students, residents and fellows committed to careers in health disparity research. Dr. Thomas is an active member of the Association of Black Cardiologists and the National Medical Association.
