The inaugural DGIM Educator Café was held on Monday, January 13th. This was a great forum for networking among educators across different sites in the division, sharing of current programs, and a deep dive into the domain of faculty teaching skills. The majority of the gathering involved a great discussion of faculty teachers in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. It started with the question of how we teach the teachers to allow progressive autonomy in learners while maintaining clinical rigor, and broadened to include how we assess teaching skills, how we give feedback, and how we create faculty development opportunities when tune-ups are needed. Working groups in both hospital medicine and the clinics will establish guidance documents on the expectations for teaching faculty.
Future Meetings
Future meetings will explore the areas of education scholarship, promotion and tenure for educators, managing silos in the health system, career planning, and funds flow.
Thank you to everyone who participated! We look forward to future meetings and will expand the food options to make it a legitimate “café” experience.
Please share any feedback you have with Dr. Zipkin.
