Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking to train at a world renowned academic and research center with a nurturing and supportive program that values resident education and growth in a friendly environment. Basically, everything Duke offers.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The people. Whether it be the faculty or your colleagues and co-residents, at Duke you are surrounded by the smartest, most thoughtful and friendly people. The faculty are leaders in their fields with a passion for teaching and the program leadership are so dedicated to creating the best possible environment for learning. Your colleagues and co-residents are extremely supportive and there is never a moment when you can’t count on someone to be there for you.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
You will hear this a lot, and it is absolutely true: the faculty take their jobs seriously but not themselves. The faculty balance teaching and guiding the house staff while creating a relaxed and friendly environment, with mutual respect and trust.

Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
Immediately! A few days after Match day a Facebook group was set up and not long after that we were planning our first few outings. It already feels like we’ve known each other for years and I know that these will be lifelong friendships.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
How truly amazing, supportive and thoughtful everyone is, and the trust the faculty put in you.

About Duke University and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Affordability, food and weather. The triangle area is the foodie capital of the south and rightly so. Even the immediate area surrounding Duke has some great spots to dine. The weather guarantees that you'll get some time by the pool for many months during the year.

Where did you choose to live, and why?
I chose to live on Erwin road, across from the hospital. I enjoy walking to work, so it was a big plus to live close by. It's also not too far from downtown Durham where a lot of the great restaurants, bars and breweries are.

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, I try to keep up to date on current events including politics and sports, and stay as active as possible.
