Fellow Perspective
Tell us briefly about your background before fellowship?
I grew up in San Diego, CA, and headed east for college at Harvard. After graduation, I taught eighth-grade science with Teach for America in Harlem, NY for two years and then spent some time working in equities on Wall Street. I realized my heart was in medicine and went to the University of Colorado for medical school and then back to California for residency at UCLA.
What are your career plans in cardiology?
I am interested in women's cardiovascular health (including how we understand CV risk for women), cardio-obstetrics, and imaging.
Why did you choose Duke for your fellowship training?
I was inspired by the number of female fellows and faculty (of all ranks) in the department, the outstanding clinical training with a diverse, complex patient population, and the unparalleled access to research opportunities.
What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?
What are your goals over the next few years, both professional and personal, and what program/location can help you thrive most? Are you a woman seeking to build your family? If so, look to see if there are women who have had babies during fellowship training in the programs you are considering.
What do you enjoy doing in the Triangle area outside of work?
Spending time with my husband and toddler. We love the public libraries, the Museum of Life and Science, the many parks and playgrounds, and eating out!
