Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted an academically oriented program with rigorous general medicine and subspecialty training, abundant research opportunities, and a supportive culture where residents trained to be leaders in medicine.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
Duke's most important strength is its people. My co-residents are bright, friendly, motivated, and passionate about medicine. Faculty are approachable, knowledgable, and eager to teach. Staff are similarly dedicated and helpful.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
The faculty are excited to work with residents and they enjoy teaching. I feel that we are treated as colleagues and valued team members.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
My co-residents are amazing! I've been so impressed with their intellectual curiosity, great attitudes, and how fun and social everyone is. We've bonded over night shifts, restaurants, running, quarry swimming, Durham Bulls games, and more!

What has surprised you most about Duke?
I've been surprised by how much I enjoy spending time with everyone at the hospital and the clinic - I have fun at work!

About Duke University and Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I love Durham because it's so livable, has a great and affordable food/brewery scene, and plenty of access to great routes and trails for running!

Where did you choose to live and why?
I live in downtown Durham near Durham Central Park because I can walk to so many restaurants, breweries, and events while commuting less than 10 minutes to the hospital! Downtown Durham is trendy and fun!

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love running (especially trail), hiking, camping, backpacking, and anything with friends!
