The strength of Duke lies in its residents and faculty involved in the residency program. Everyone is so nice, supportive, and academically curious. It is a place where everyone is striving to be their best and willing to help you succeed.

Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a program with strong medicine and pediatrics that helps residents excel at treating common conditions, but also gives them the opportunity to see rare conditions from all over the world and exposes them to various subspecialties.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The strength of Duke lies in its residents and faculty involved in the residency program. Everyone is so nice, supportive, and academically curious. It is a place where everyone is striving to be their best and willing to help you succeed.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
I have been very impressed with faculty and house staff relationships. The faculty is there to guide care when needed but gives the residents the autonomy to become confident with decision making and grow as physicians. I also appreciate the emphasis on evidence-based medicine. On every single rotation we discuss papers, society guidelines, etc. It has been a great learning environment.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
All of the residents have been great. Everyone I've worked with on the wards has been helpful and supportive. There are enough of us too that there is always a group of people organizing a social event, so it has been easy to for friendships.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
How nice everyone is! I have been living in the south for almost 10 years now, so I'm used to people being friendly, yet my neighbors, colleagues, and even random strangers have all blown me away with their kindness since I've arrived.

About Duke University and Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Proximity to nature. I love to hike, trail run, and swim. I also have two active dogs that like to do the same. Within 15 minutes drive there are tons of places to do all of these things. Also the air is fresh and there are fireflies at night in the summer; it's very idyllic.

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
There are people from all over the world living in the Triangle. There are also many different cuisines and industries represented in the area. People in any profession, from anywhere in the world will find like-minded people in an around Durham.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I chose to live in the Lakewood area. I wanted a small yard for my dogs to play in and I wanted to be close to the hospital. I live about 7 minutes drive, 15 minutes bike, 45 minutes walk from the hospital. I'm also only 15 minutes from the Eno River and 25 minutes from the airport.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Explore the various neighborhoods ahead of time. Each area has a different feel. However, everything is relatively close together and traffic is not an issue so you'll be able to get where you need regardless of where you live.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I play guitar and saxophone, and like to sing and write songs. I swim, run, and hike with my dogs whenever I can. I love cooking and trying new foods.
