What are your career goals?
I aspire to be a competent clinical nephrologist who incorporates medical education with APPs, medical students, and residents.
What were you looking for in a fellowship program?
I was looking for programs with high acuity, complex pathology, and a strong faculty mentor presence. Additionally, I wanted a program that was innovative in its curriculum, incorporating a flipped classroom approach to teaching rather than the traditional PowerPoint-style lectures. Furthermore, I was interested in a fellowship program that would expose me to research and help me incorporate it into clinical practice. Finally, I desired a program where I would get exposure to all facets of nephrology, including GN, chronic dialysis, transplant, and POCUS.
Which Scholar pathway will you choose and why?
I am still deciding, but I’m leaning towards the clinical concentration. I see myself predominantly as a clinical nephrologist, but I am open to exploring other pathways if one interests me.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
There are many! For one, the people. All of the faculty members and fellows I have met have been overly supportive thus far. It feels like a family that extends well beyond the clinical space. Additionally, Duke allows fellows to follow their passion and explore what career pathway meets his/her needs. Most importantly, Dr. Sparks is fellow-centric and is willing to incorporate each fellow’s perspective to make the fellowship the best it can be.
