Reflections on the Duke Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program that would challenge me everyday and help prepare me for my career post-residency, but most importantly one where I was excited to go to work every day. The Duke residents I met at the interview dinner, were some of the most intelligent and fun people I had met along the interview trail. I immediately felt as if they were a family, and I was a part of it.
What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
Duke has an incredible amount of resources that allows you to accomplish all of your career goals. In my opinion, the biggest strength is the collegiality and support you receive here at Duke. Everyone is always eager to help inside and outside of the hospital, this includes Dr. Zaas, the leadership team, your upper level residents and especially your co-interns.
What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
All of the attendings, fellows and upper level residents I've worked with are invested in your education. They are all incredibly approachable and happy to teach!
Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
My co-residents are incredible! They are a group of intelligent and hard working people who help get me through a hard work day. They're also so much fun to hang out with outside of work. We are constantly having wine nights, cookouts and checking out breweries in the area.
About Duke University and Durham
What has surprised you most about Duke?
The amount of support you receive from you co-residents and mentors is endless! The camaraderie is present inside and outside fo the hospital.
Where did you choose to live and why?
I chose to live halfway between downtown Durham and downtown Chapel Hill to have both cities easily accessible. It's right next to 15-501 and a less than ten minute drive to the hospital.
What are your interests outside of medicine?
I enjoy watching lots of television/movies, country concerts, hiking, trying new wineries/breweries and game nights with friends.
