Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program that was a "good fit" for me. A place that was collaborative, inclusive, and welcoming.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The people and 4+2 schedule.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
I appreciate all my co-residents. I love that we are all so different in our interests, hobbies, and goals, and there are always events and spontaneous hang-outs. Being on a new rotation, knowing that your co-residents have the same struggles, and being in a space where it is okay to share makes the experience fun.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
The IM program leadership from PD, APDs, staff, and chiefs. Everyone is genuinely friendly and supportive. We get everyone's number and are encouraged to reach out with any questions.

About Life in Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
There are lots to explore in the Triangle. Variety of restaurants, grocery stores, and hiking trails. Minimal traffic. You can meet a variety of professional people outside of medicine.

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
As an Asian-American, there are lots of restaurants and grocery stores. Diversity in students, professors, and staff given that there is 3 academic college nearby.

Where did you choose to live and why?
Close to the hospital (4-5 minute drive) and reasonable price for 1 bed/ 1 bathroom.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Ask current residents about their housing and experience. Check apartment.com, Facebook, and local realty company website for available apartments. If you can, please check out the space in person as it may actually be very different from their website picture.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I like watching reality tv (90 days fiance, real housewife, love after lockup, etc), walking aimlessly in target, chilling at coffeeshops while people-watching, and cooking.
