Employee Health Hours!

• Employee Occupational Health & Wellness (EOHW) COVID Hotline, (919) 385-0429, option 1 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, and 8 a.m. - noon on weekends), After hours call the Duke emergency operator for the exposure nurse on call at (919) 684-8115.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Prioritized GME appts are now available also at 6 pm and 7 pm! For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. Home | Personal Assistance Service (duke.edu)

Hi there, Neighbors!

This is Victor again with more community engagement opportunities for August!

It was great seeing people at the first Stead Tread meet-up. And, many thanks to our Med-Peds friend Brandon Moritz for helping me find a first aid kit to give to the Spanish-speaking families that I gave a health talk to this past month! They loved the teaching on heat emergencies (as shown by the cool hat they let me wear) and want us back for more in the future.

As a reminder, the goal of these events is to help people know and love the Durham community for as long as we're here, and hopefully create a lot of fun activities that let residents bond with each other!

Here's what we have for the coming month:

• 🏫👨‍🎓Lunch with 8th Graders in the Duke BOOST Program 🥪👨‍⚕️

  • Details: Come have lunch with 8th graders in BOOST, a program at Duke that encourages middle schoolers from historically underrepresented backgrounds in medicine to pursue health careers. This might be especially nice for people on outpatient with flexible schedules and no noon conference lunch. And, if you can’t make this, I’m hoping to start a (very loose) mentorship program with some of the students throughout the year and will give details when available!

  • Time: Wednesday, August 6 from 12-1pm (come and go as you need)

  • Location: Trent Semans Center (“TSCHE”)

• 🏃‍♀️👟 Stead Tread Get Together- Part 2! 🚶‍♂️👩‍⚕️

  • Details: It’s Stead Tread 5K season! As this fundraiser for Lincoln Community Health Center approaches on September 20, 9am (mark your calendars!), we’ll pick up advertising and the requests for people joining the race. We’d also love help planning if you have the bandwidth! This is another hangout to learn more, and again there is a tab provided (this time with residency money), so come hungry, thirsty, and curious to learn more and hang!

  • Time: Thursday, August 14 at 7pm

  • Location: Durham Beer Garden (812 N Mangum St) (for real this time…)

  • Sign-Up: none needed!

• 🚚🥫Duke Memorial Mobile Market 🥦🍎

  • Details: This opportunity courtesy of Dr. Jenny Van Kirk's husband! The Duke Memorial Mobile Market is one of many local groups fighting food insecurity in Durham. Join as we load and organize food to then distribute to our neighbors in Durham

  • Time: Saturday, August 16 from 9am-11am (but happens every third Saturday)

  • Location: Duke Memorial (504 W Chapel Hill St)

Finally, for those who can’t make it to these events but want to help out, the group we’re highlighting for donations this month is the West End/Lyon Park Legacy Project Back to School Drive! The West End/Lyon Park Legacy Project is an initiative led by several elderly members of the historically Black West End neighborhood of Durham to memorialize their home. Every year, they put on a back-to-school drive for kids in the neighborhood to give out basic school supplies, toiletries, and groceries. They used to get funding from Duke but not anymore, so any help would be appreciated- even $5-10 per person would help tremendously with the goal of raising at least $200 for the event. They take checks that you can give in-person, but it’s probably easier to Venmo me at @Victor-Ayeni-1, and then I’ll write a group check to give to the group at their August 16th event.

As always, these events are all ones suggested or led by fellow members of the IM residency. If you have any ideas at all about community volunteering events, or about happenings in Durham that could help others get to know the city better, please reach out to me to get it added to the next email.
