Internal Medicine Residency News - January 12th, 2026
Hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the warm weather this weekend. We know that the respiratory viruses are EVERYWHERE and we appreciate all the diligent efforts to stay well during an early and wild flu season. We know it is super busy on all the teams as well and we appreciate you!
Things to note in the next few weeks - we will be setting up the dates for a “fellowship overview” meeting for interns and the “application timeline” meetings for JARs. Our goal is to make sure everyone is prepared for their next steps. If you are planning on a career in hospital medicine or primary care, don’t worry - we will have career prep meetings for you too!
SARs, it is time to get yourself registered for the ABIM (board) exam in August. Registration is open through April. As you start to get paperwork for your fellowship/job credentialing, please send to Bridget and cc me!
Kudos this week to Daniel Bujnowski and Lexi Green from Dr. Katie Young for crushing it in the Duke MICU, to Kaushik Puranam, Meredith Srour, and attending Dr. Liz Hankollari from rheum attending Dr. Sonali Bracken for excellent care of a patient, to Sabrina Arezo for working with the BOOST program, and to Luderve Rosier, Jimshad Farooque-Wooden, and Amani Allen for teaching at City of Medicine (sent in by Victor Ayeni). Big kudos to our recruitment zoom crew: Maira Haque, Sonum Tharwani, Annie Kleynerman Roels, Daniel Nwosuocha, Alex Danyluk, Alyssa Morrison, Megan Hansen, Averie Dickinson, Sam Menegas, Gabby Pancio, Ian Malinow, Katherine Dunn, David Stevens, Zach Creech, Celyn Bregio, Reeti Gulati, Maggie Oliver, and Amber Feng, and our My Takers DJ Jimenez, Maison Furley, Averie Dickinson, Natalie Cohen, Othmane Jadi, and Luderve Rosier!
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to our Stead Grant recipients! Way to go! Huge thank you to our DOM faculty reviewers and mentors as well.

Hi there, Neighbors!
This is Victor again with community engagement opportunities for January! The aim of these events is to help people know and love the Durham community for as long as we're here, and hopefully create a lot of fun activities that let residents bond with each other!
Here's what we have for the coming month:
-
👨⚕️👩⚕️Community Engagement Recruitment Zoom 👨⚕️👩⚕️
-
UPDATE: I'm still looking for extra help for the session this Wednesday, January 21! I'd especially need people for the 6-6:30pm time slot to talk to the applicants about their time in Durham so far, especially as it relates to interacting with vulnerable patient populations. Please let me know if you're able to help!
-
As we round out this residency interview season, I’ll be leading a special session on community engagement in Durham, including service opportunities, recreation, family life, food, and more! I’m looking for 5-6 people to help me on the Zoom breakout rooms!
-
Time: Wednesday, January 21 from 5:30-6:30pm
-
Location: Zoom (link here)
-
Sign-Up/Contact: Email me (Victor Ayeni)

🥪🧤From “Homeless Outreach to Medical Engagement” (HOME) Initiative 👨⚕️🏥
-
UPDATE: We are at capacity for this event!
-
A few people have been working on a street medicine initiative in Durham, and while it is unclear if/when that will come to fruition, the community partner helping with that has agreed to let residents join their relationship-building excursions to meet people living outside and provide them with materials such as food and warm clothes. The hope is that this will facilitate providing care should the street medicine project come to life. We would not be providing medical care or advice, but I personally see this as a nice way to meet those people living outside that I always pass on my runs or way to work but never know how to talk to as fellow neighbors in Durham.
-
Time: Saturday, January 24 from 11am-12pm (hoping this can be monthly)
-
Location: One or two known outdoor encampments in either downtown or central Durham, guided by community partners who have regularly been there already
-
Sign-Up/Contact: Email me (Victor Ayeni)

Finally, for those who can’t make it to these events but want to help out, the group we’re highlighting for donations this month is Fresh Start Durham! This is an initiative to give neighbors in Durham the dignity of a free shower, clean clothes, and a haircut. Even a small donation helps people obtain these things that we take for granted but that can be such meaningful ways to acknowledge someone's humanity.
If you have any ideas at all about community volunteering events, or about happenings in Durham that could help others get to know the city better, please reach out to me to get it added to the next email!
Yours in neighbor-ing,
Victor
