Internal Medicine Residency News - June 22, 2026

WHAT? The 2026-27 chiefs have started and it’s orientation week? Days are long and weeks are short as we turn the calendar into a new year. Big thanks again to Lauren, Sandra, Hannah, Sachi, and Haley for leading us through 2025-26 and big DukeFam welcome to Karen, John, Amber, Nick, and Sam who, if their Instagram and email hold true, will absolutely be amazing as our fearless chief crew this year.

A final congratulations to our graduating SARs. Forever DukeFam. Rising JARs and rising SARs/SAR +’s … really excited to see you in your new roles.

The incoming interns have GME orientation on Wednesday followed by Duke IM orientation Thurs-Sat. Please be on the lookout for a Shadow Day email if you are working on an inpatient team over the weekend so that you can welcome the new interns with a smile, ensuring they can log in successfully to Epic or CPRS and a heads up about the best snacks, the cleanest bathrooms, and the best deals at the Patriot Store.

Be ready to support Tommy Hamner as he delivers the esteemed Tom Holland Memorial Lecture on Friday!

Kudos this week to Roberto Rosario, Maggie Oliver, and Annie Roels for their amazing end of shift work to save a patient’s life with quick activation of the ICC express (led by former IM residents Nate Goodwin and Zach Wegermann), to Anjali Bhatt from Dr. Pickett and the Palliative Care team for amazing family communication, to Michael Quereshi from John Demis for personalized care for a veteran on hospice, and also from John to Ankit Kayastha and Madhuri Gottam for patient care and looking out for each other in a busy and challenging CICU, to our end of year ACRs Ryan Edwards, Shivani Rangaswamy, and Madeline Watson for closing out the year strong, and to Kamron Zand from Josh Barton for more amazing family communication in a challenging scenario.

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Katelyn Rennyson and Best Uchehara for the recent publication in Contemporary Clinical Trials: Rennyson L, Kenjale A, Chiswell K, Li Y, Uchehara B, Armstrong S, Goldstein B, Kelsey M, Hurdle M, McGarrah R, Nelson A, Patel M, Peterson ED, Roberts J, Trusty G, Douglas PS, Shah S and Pagidipati N. "Design and rationale of the pERSonalized cardIovascuLar dIsease prEvention, treatment, and CarE (RESILIENCE) study." Contemporary Clinical Trials Volume 167, August 2026, 108369.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!

Hey y'all!

We’re back with more community engagement opportunities for the month of June.

Huge thanks to Sonum Tharwani, Connor Hughes, Kiara Gallagher, Leila Azari, and Sabrina Arezo for volunteering to be part of the 2026-2027 Resiteering Committee! We’ve got some fun things cooking for yall this year!

Shoutout to our folks who participated in events last month: Leila helped sort food packages at the Duke Memorial Mobile Market; Roshini and I led a dance class at Bull City Fit!

Here’s our event schedule for this month + details of each event and who to contact if need be! Trying something new by putting this info in calendar format. Also including some community events, not just volunteering, for folks to get out there and meet people from our lovely Durham community. If you go to an event please take pics and send them to me!!!

Finally, the group we’re highlighting for donations this month is…Families Moving ForwardThis is a well known Durham nonprofit that helps families experiencing homelessness find temporary housing. It also supports them through case management, skills training, and holistic counseling including in health and emotional needs. Donate HERE!

That’s all, folks! Wishing the best of luck to our amazing SARs on their next steps and excited to welcome the new intern class on the next email!!
