Internal Medicine Residency News - May 4th, 2026

Happy May! The end of the year is really coming up quickly! This week we have the professional development half day for rising SARs on Thursday plus our first of the three “How to Be A JAR” sessions at academic half day. End of year meetings have started for preliminary interns and SARs as well. Keep an eye out on the calendar for other events and happenings!

Thank you to Lauren for organizing a fantastic Greenfield visiting professor grand rounds and meet up with MELT residents! So inspired by Dr. Spicer!

Big kudos to our ACLT team (Zoe Shancer, Lisette Corbin, Maggie Oliver, Frank Estrella, Megan Hansen, Amber Feng, Sam Menegas, Collin Darwish, Alee Danyluk, Maria Paz, Rishabh Sehra, Oyin Adidepe, and Ankit Kayastha), led by Drs. Zipkin and Sloan for their tremendous advocacy in Washington DC, with platforms that focused on mental health care and responsible use of AI for prior authorization.

Thank you to the Department of Medicine for a wonderful event on Wednesday night where we celebrated departmental award winners and had a chance to thank our graduating SARs as well as the current chiefs and welcome the incoming chiefs! We presented some of our trainee selected awards and a number of our #DukeFam won awards, including former residents, several former chief residents, or members of program leadership! Congratulations to:

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Victor Ayeni for his recent presentation at the Heart Rhythm Society Meeting:  "NSVT as a Predictor of Appropriate Device Therapies: An APPRAISE-ATP Substudy"

Hey everyone,

First, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to Victor for all the work he’s done with Resiteering over the past couple of years! He’s passing me the baton, and I hope to keep this initiative going strong-- AND will have a couple of interns join me shortly because we can’t all do 5 million things at once like Victor 😉

Second shoutout to everyone who came out to the events last month!! Check out these fun pics from the colorectal screening campaign and the Habitat for Humanity builds!!

Ok so here’s what’s on the docket for next month:

  • ❤️👨‍⚕️ PAD Teaching at Jubilee Home ft. Duke Cardiology ⛪❤️

    • We’re back at our peripheral artery disease (PAD) outreach with Dr. Dennis Narcisse of Duke interventional cardiology, this time with the recently incarcerated residents of Jubilee Home seeking to rebuild their lives. They have a weekly dinner and have invited us to speak to them about PAD and other health topics in small groups, and we’d love to have at least two residents to help out!

    • Time: Tuesday, May 12 from 6-8pm

    • Location:  Jubilee Home (404 E Umstead St, Durham, NC 27707)

    • Sign-Up/Contact: email Victor Ayeni at victor.ayeni@duke.edu

  • 💃🕺Bull City Fit Dance Class 🕺💃

    • Bull City Fit is a community-based wellness program for children with a BMI > 95th percentile. Roshini and Gabby Cooper absolutely crushed it last month, so they want us back!! I’ll be hosting a dance class at one of their evening workshops- come join me!

    • Time: Wednesday, May 13 at 7pm

    • Location: Edison Johnson Recreation Center (500 W Murray Ave)

    • Sign-Up: Text Madhura Pande at 8436949184

  • 🚚🥫Duke Memorial Mobile Market 🥦🍎

    • Join one of many local groups fighting food insecurity in Durham as you load and organize food to then distribute to your neighbors in Durham.

    • Time: Saturday, May 15 anytime between 7:30am-1:30pm- you pick based on your shift!

    • Location: Duke Memorial (504 W Chapel Hill St)

    • Sign-Up: https://signup.com/go/pLjRwWm (there are multiple sign-up times with different tasks that you can choose from!)

    • Contact: Matt Wood (Jenny Van Kirk’s husband) at 828-301-9703

For those who can’t make it to these events but want to help out, the group we’re highlighting for donations this month is…Fresh Start Durham! This is an initiative to give neighbors in Durham the dignity of a free shower, clean clothes, and a haircut. Even a small donation helps people obtain these things that we take for granted but that can be such meaningful ways to acknowledge someone's humanity. Donate HERE!

And if you have any initiatives you want us to volunteer with or donate to, please let me know!! We are always looking for new ways to connect with the Durham community.

Ok phew, I think that’s all, folks! Hope to see yall at one of these events!!

- Madhura
