Pearls from 11/17/20 Medicine LEADS

The Nov. 17, 2020 session of Duke Medicine LEADS featured Richard Shannon, MD, presenting "Leaning into Harm: The Evolving Partnership Between the Duke Quality System and Clinical Departments."

Here are pearls and takeaways from the session:

  1. Preventable safety events not only lead to significant morbidity and mortality for patients, they also result in significant cost increases. Decreasing harm leads to decreased costs for the health system. Harm prevention is cost reduction.
  2. Providing equitable care is fundamental to providing high-quality care.
  3. The quality of today is based on claims data, defined by payers and regulators, and is viewed retrospectively. The quality of tomorrow should be one that leverages clinical data registries, is defined by patients and providers, and is built into care delivery.
