Abdelmalek part of team to receive Duke-Coulter Translational Research Partnership grant

Manal Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine (Gasteroenterology), is part of a team that has received a 2015-16 Duke-Coulter Translational Research Partnership grant.

Dr. Abdelmalek, Peter Hollender, PhD, biomedical engineering research scientist, and Mark Palmeri, MD, PhD, assistant research professor in biomedical engineering and anesthesiology, will use the funding to build a portable ultrasound elastography device for measuring the stiffness of the liver. Clinicians could use this device to help diagnose non-alcoholic fatty liver disease without an invasive liver biopsy.

Their project is one of four new projects and two renewal projects to receive nearly $800,000 for research. The funding, which begins on Sept. 1, marks the 10th year of the program.
