Boulware's MGR: effects of systemic racism on health

The May 14, 2021 session of Duke Medicine Grand Rounds featured a presentation by L. Ebony Boulware, MD, MPH,  on, "The Change We Seek: Viewing the Effects of Systemic Racism on Health Through the Lens of Kidney Care."

During her presentation, Dr. Boulware:

  • reviewed definitions and meanings of race and racism
  • considered the roles of environment versus genes on health inequities
  • reviewed evidence of systemic racism in medical care
  • discussed the harmful role of racialized medical thinking in science and medicine

Boulware explained that in order to rethink our use of race in science and medicine, we need to confront our beliefs, embrace anti-racism in clinical care, and leverage our professions for change.

Duke Medicine Grand Rounds takes place each Friday at 12 p.m. View the full recording of this session and see schedule of upcoming presentations here.
