J. Frank Wharam, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine), presented the annual Dr. Eugene A. Stead Jr. lecture at Medicine Grand Rounds on Fri., Nov. 12, 2021, as part of Duke’s Medical Alumni Weekend. His presentation was entitled, "Detecting Health Policy Effects on Clinical Outcomes and Equity: The Case of Patient Financial Incentives and Diabetes".
Dr. Wharam started with an overview of Dr. Eugene Stead, a beloved physician, medical educator, and researcher. Wharam went on to discuss the history and evolution of private health insurance in the United States and how they impact health outcomes and equity. He explained how measures of health outcomes and equity are developed in large-scale health insurance claims data and understand the impact of high-deductible and value-based insurance designs on health outcomes and equity among diabetes patients.

About the Stead Lecture
The annual lecture honors Eugene Stead, chair of the Department of Medicine from 1947 to 1967. Dr. Stead founded the Duke Cardiovascular Disease Research Database, which today serves as the resource for the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and he also founded the nation’s first physician assistant program at Duke in the 1960s.
