Pearls from 10/12/21 Medicine LEADS

The October 12, 2021, session of Duke Medicine LEADS featured Adam DeVore, MDOmar Mohamedaly, MD; Stephen J. Greene, MD; and Lindsay King, MD, presenting "Perspectives and Innovations in Multidisciplinary Care at Duke."

Here are pearls and takeaways from the session:

  1. Initiatives aimed at improving both intra- and extra-departmental communication have been key to growing multidisciplinary care at Duke. This has taken the form of geographic co-localization of specialists, building relationships with referral subspecialists, and involvement of case management and pharmacy for strategies at mitigating financial toxicity.
  2. Primary Care Providers (PCPs) are integral to the successful provision of multidisciplinary care. Developing and strengthening lines of communication between subspecialists and PCPs is an area of active effort.
  3. Quality metrics are still evolving in many domains of multidisciplinary care. Incorporating both payer-defined and patient-centered quality-of-life metrics into the self-assessment of multi-disciplinary care programs is key.
