Pearls from 8/31/21 Medicine LEADS

The August 31, 2021 session of Duke Medicine LEADS featured a presentation by Erica Taylor, MD, MBA, on, "Addressing Racial Health Disparities in an Academic Medical Center: The Duke Health Experience."

Here are pearls and takeaways from the session:

  1. There are many barriers to implementing change within a health care system, and diversity of leadership within the healthcare system has its own unique challenges.
  2. It is easy to have stagnation and frustration in the process when the principles of inclusion are not distributed across entities. It is important to stay persistent on the mission to overcome obstacles in creating aligned, coordinated efforts.
  3. There is ongoing need for restructuring functional areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and aligning strategies between the university, hospitals, and health systems will improve the focus and achieve operational implementation protocols.
  4. As change happens, each department, unit, and individual will present with its own unique set of challenges and vary in the response to initiative. This is important to recognize and address in a uniform fashion as these challenges arise.
