Recent JAMA Network publications from Schulman + Ubel

There were two recent publications for DGIM in the journals of The JAMA Network: a JAMA Viewpoint article with Dr. Kevin Schulman as the senior author and an original investigation in JAMA Surgery including co-author Dr. Peter Ubel

In the JAMA Surgery publication, "Quality of Patient Decisions About Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy", the authors share results from their cross-sectional study where they questioned the quality of patient decisions about breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Their study found that only a minority of patients (less than 44%)  felt that they made a high-quality decision and knew most of the facts before undergoing the surgery, suggesting decisions about breast reconstruction after mastectomy can be improved. This article was an epub ahead of print published May 3, 2017 in JAMA Surgery online. Click here to read the full article.

In Schulman's Viewpoint entitled, "Financing and Distribution of Pharmaceuticals in the United States", the three authors describe the complex pharmaceutical system and explain how patients and doctors have relatively little to do with financing these drugs. This was an online first Viewpoint published May 15, 2017. Read the full article here.
