Zipkin to serve as chair of Program for Women in Internal Medicine

Daniella Zipkin, MD, associate professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine), will serve as chair of the Program for Women in Internal Medicine effective Oct. 1, announced Laura Svetkey, MD, MHS, vice chair for faculty development and diversity in the Department of Medicine.

The Program for Women in Internal Medicine (PWIM) is a Department of Medicine-sponsored program that includes all women faculty and trainees. Its goal is to build and maintain a supportive and equitable work environment that facilitates career advancement and satisfaction among women faculty and trainees.

PWIM has been instrumental in highlighting and developing strategies to address disparities in salary, academic advancement, and mentoring, said Svetkey.

“With her deep dedication to supporting her colleagues and trainees, Dr. Zipkin will bring an exciting energy to our efforts to improve the climate and opportunities for women in the Department of Medicine,” said Dr. Svetkey.

Zipkin also will serve as associate vice chair for faculty development and diversity. She will replace Lisa Criscione-Schreiber, MD, MEd, who became vice chair for education earlier this year.

PWIM provides an important service to the Department by encouraging everyone to focus on aspects of faculty life that are not only relevant to women, but more broadly applicable.

Zipkin is associate program director (ambulatory) for the Duke Internal Medicine Residency Program and vice chief for education in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), completed her residency in primary care internal medicine at New York University and clinician-educator fellowship at UCSF.

“I am very grateful to have been selected for this role, and I am eager to incorporate the voices of all faculty in the department as we further build the mission of PWIM,” said Zipkin.
