Geriatrician Heather Whitson studies connections between multiple chronic conditions that many elderly people live with at once. Her research exploring links between vision loss and cognitive decline has altered practices in low-vision clinics. Her studies probing possible biological links between age-related disorders of eye and brain formerly considered unrelated, hold broad clinical promise.

Funding opp: Duke-UNC Immunotherapy Training Grant
The Duke-UNC Immunotherapy Training Grant (DUNC-IMTG) is a NCI-funded T32 training program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University that trains postdoctoral fellows in pre-clinical and/or clinical research focusing on tumor immunotherapy and/or stem cell transplantation immunology. Applications for 2017-18 are due at 5 p.m. on Aug. 11, 2017.

New staff member Judy Darnell joins the Department of Medicine team
Last month, Judy Darnell joined the Medicine Chair’s office as the new administrative coordinator.
Darnell has worked for Duke Health for seven years, working in Duke Respiratory Care Services as an administrative assistant for five years. Darnell also brings experience in business management to the office.

After a 7-year tenure as Medicine Chair, Mary Klotman, MD, officially became the Dean of School of Medicine last month. Before she left, she passed her role to Joseph Rogers, MD, professor of medicine (Cardiology),who has taken over as Interim Chair. Dr. Rogers is committed to continuing to improve the Department’s growth in education, clinical care, and research. Philip Barr featured in NPR story on health benefits of forest bathing
Philip Barr, MD, Integrative Medicine Physician, Consulting Associate (General Internal Medicine), was recently interviewed for an NPR story, “Forest Bathing: A Retreat to Nature Can Boost Immunity and Mood.” The news story discussed the mental and physical benefits of a meditative practice called forest bathing, which encourage participants to practice mindfulness through nature.
The multidisciplinary HIDOC approach
Our teaching clinic, the Duke Outpatient Clinic (DOC), is serious about managing complex patients, those individuals who are sometimes labeled by the ED and hospital as "frequent flyers". A new program called "HIDOC" stands for "Highly Individualized, Dedicated Onsite Care" began this year and is led by 4 Duke GIM faculty members: Drs. Lynn Bowlby, Patrick Hemming, and Jacob Feigal.
