NOVEMBER! We ended Doctoberfest in style with awesome Super Smash Bros (Super Smash Sisters?) trick or treating, starting at Grand Rounds and hitting the 3 hospitals throughout the day. Special thanks to our amazing chiefs as well as Drs. Van Kirk and Pong!
Big kudos to all who worked the “fall back” night. Not the most favorite night of the year to work and we appreciate you!
The first week of recruitment was fantastic! Big thanks to our My Take crew of Max Osherwitz, Jack Kaster, Oyin Adidepe, Vanesa Campos, Ryan Moore, and Chris Gitter as well as our pre-interview zoom crew of Alia Sadek, Madhura Pande, Leila Azari, Victor Ayeni, Chris Norberg, David Stevens, Megan Hansen, Reeti Gulati, and Neha Pal!
Other kudos this week to Katherine Dunn from Wes Ongtengco for her amazing complex care on Duke GM, to Richard McLane for getting a written kudos card from a veteran in PRIME, to Roberto Rosario from Dr. Upadhya for excellent work in clinic, to Daniel Nwosuocha from Dr. Hankollari for excellent work overnight on a complex patient, and to Hassan Raja and Sam McCachren for patient centered care for a very sick patient!
This week, while we mark the end of Doctoberfest, we also move into the lead up to Turkey Bowl as well as ongoing advisor and mid year meetings. CICR is in full swing and we have concluded the fellowship interviews! Looking forward to a great month of November with some great conferences, reports, and DukeFam vibes. All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Prioritized GME appts are now available also at 6 pm and 7 pm! For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Hi there, Neighbors!
This is Victor again with more community engagement opportunities for November! Thanks to the many people who helped out at City of Medicine Academy, whether in-person with their college prep session or asynchronously with revising essays. The students were effusive in their gratitude for the thoughtful help so many of you provided, and for the mere fact that we were willing to step up and help them in a time of need.
As a reminder, the goal of these events is to help people know and love the Durham community for as long as we're here, and hopefully create a lot of fun activities that let residents bond with each other!

❤️👨⚕️ PAD Community Teaching ft. Duke Cardiology ⛪❤️

Help Dr. Dennis Narcisse, new Duke interventional cardiology attending and former Duke IM chief, as he leads a teaching on PAD prevention and management at the men’s group of a historically Black church in Durham’s “West End” neighborhood. This is a demographic that historically has a deficient recognition and thus oversized burden and of PAD, and we'd love to have at least two more volunteers to help with the session!

🏫👨🎓City of Medicine Academy (CMA) Science Fridays👨⚕️👨🏫

The City of Medicine Academy (CMA) is a local high school built to prepare youth to enter healthcare fields, with most of the students coming from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds. Science Fridays are a monthly time for Duke residents to give presentations to students on the topic of their choosing, all with the goal of showing them the healthcare field and connecting them to physicians who can mentor them in their journeys.

Finally, for those who can’t make it to these events but want to help out, the group we’re highlighting for donations this month is Open Table Ministry! In neighborly fashion, Open Table is an outreach program for those experiencing homelessness that centers around relationship building. It offers tangible help through a shelter, case management services, and a “free store” of supplies for daily living. But even more, it works to give an intangible sense of community meant to affirm the dignity of people who are often ignored. This month is their biggest fundraiser, “Walk in Their Shoes,” and they could use any help you can give!
As always, these events are all ones suggested or led by fellow members of the IM residency. If you have any ideas at all about community volunteering events, or about happenings in Durham that could help others get to know the city better, please reach out to me to get it added to the next email.
