Dr. Katherine Garman Receives 2025 Neil L. Spector Art of Medicine Award

Katherine Garman, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Neil L. Spector Art of Medicine Award.

Established in memory of Dr. Neil Spector, the award honors faculty who exemplify humanism and mentorship in clinical and translational research. Recipients are recognized for demonstrating integrity, compassion, altruism, respect, and empathy—values that defined Dr. Spector’s legacy as a physician-scientist.

Dr. Garman was nominated by Division Chief Dr. Andrew Muir, with additional letters of support from Drs. Omar Martinez-Uribe and HannahSofia Brown. Her nominators praised her longstanding dedication to mentorship and her inclusive approach to research leadership.

“Through mentorship in her research program, Dr. Garman has offered numerous trainees a rewarding and rigorous research experience to prepare them for a career in science,” wrote Dr. Muir. “She has created a research environment where all members—mentors and mentees alike—have a voice and are empowered to participate in the intellectual conversation.”

To date, her mentees have included faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students, many of whom have pursued careers in academic medicine and research.

Dr. Garman will be the featured speaker at Medicine Grand Rounds on June 21 alongside colleagues and mentees.
