Eight from Medicine selected for Duke Clinical Leadership Program
Duke Health has announced a new class of the Duke Clinical Leadership Program (DCLP), including eight faculty from the Department of Medicine. The 26 clinicians in the 2018 class will join the ranks of the 169 fellows who completed the DCLP program during its first seven years.

Discovering what malignant cells require to thrive in blood vessels and bone marrow
Dorothy Sipkins, MD, PhD, is a hematologist-oncologist who studies cancer. But to understand the cleverness of her work, it’s helpful to think of her as an ecologist—a cell ecologist.
Sipkins identifies very specific biological habitats and interactions that allow malignant cells to move, proliferate and survive chemical attacks, traits that too often produce fatal disease.
“I love thinking about what is on the outside of the cell. What the cell is seeing. What the cell is interacting with, the 3-D environment it interacts with,” says Sipkins.

The Department of Medicine Chair's Office is now accepting applications for the 2018 Chair’s Research Award, which funds junior investigators who are making the transition to becoming independent scientists and planning for their first extramural funding. Deadline to apply is Jan. 5, 2018. Letter of intent is due Dec. 1, 2017.

Duke Infectious Diseases celebrates 40 years of history and growth as a division
On Oct. 20-21 at Hanes House, Duke Department of Medicine celebrated the Division of Infectious Disease’s 40th anniversary in a symposium that reviewed Duke Infectious Diseases’ infancy, years of research, and the division’s contributors over the years. The division was established in 1977 with David Durack, MD, MBBS as the first division chief for Infectious Diseases.
