13 Medicine faculty recognized by the School of Medicine

We are proud to announce the following Department of Medicine faculty who are being recognized with awards given annually by the School of Medicine.

Nathan Thielman, MD, MPH, professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases), received the Leonard Palumbo Jr., MD, Faculty Achievement Award, which recognizes a member of the School of Medicine faculty who displays dedication to compassionate patient care and excellence in the teaching and mentoring of young physicians.

Michael Sketch, MD, professor of medicine (Cardiology), received the Leonard B. Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, which is presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation is designed to recognize compassion and sensitivity in the delivery of healthcare. This award is presented annually to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding compassion in the delivery of care; respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues; as well as demonstrated clinical excellence. 

Deverick Anderson, MD, professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases), received the Ruth and A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions in clinical science research.The Ruth and A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize was established to advance research opportunities for younger faculty members and to help publicize the caliber of medical research underway at Duke. 

Larry Crawford, MD, associate professor of medicine (Cardiology) and Andrew Muir, MD, professor of medicine (Gastroenterology), received the Excellence in Professionalism Award, which recognizes the importance of promoting ethical and professional behavior within our community. This award is presented annually to a faculty member who exemplifies professionalism and personifies Duke’s guiding principles of respect, trustworthiness, diversity, teamwork, and learning.

Two faculty received Research Mentoring Awards, which were established in 2009 to recognize faculty members in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing with excellence in research mentoring. The recipients from the Department are:

  • Kenneth Schmader, MD, professor of medicine (Geriatrics), received the Career Mentoring Award in clinical/population health science.
  • Tracy Wang, MD, MHS associate professor of medicine (Cardiology), received the Early Career Mentoring Award in clinical/population health science.

Two faculty from the Department of Medicine received the Master Clinician/Teacher Award, which honors individuals with superlative accomplishment and service in the areas of clinical care and teaching. Awards are given to recognize clinical practitioners who exemplify the highest standards of clinical care, pedagogy, and professionalism or to basic scientists who achieve distinction in pedagogy and professionalism.

Four faculty received the the Whitehead Scholars award. The Whitehead Scholars Program, supported through a gift from the Whitehead Charitable Foundation, helps attract and nurture the most promising biomedical researchers to the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine.
