Beyond DNA: Probing big data to demystify disease
As a young researcher, Svati Shah expected that genomic studies would reveal vital insights into the roots of disease. When they did not, the cardiologist widened her net to compare many more molecular components at once. The result is a growing understanding of the cellular profile of disease more specific than tales told by static DNA.
Woods named American Board of Pediatrics VP for Examination Administration
The American Board of Pediatrics has announced the appointment of Suzanne K. Woods, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and medicine at Duke University Medical Center, to be the ABP’s Vice President for Examination Administration and Credentialing, effective January 1, 2018.
Department of Medicine celebrates the “Greenfield Era” of Medicine
Joseph Greenfield, MD, chair of the Duke Department of Medicine from 1983 to 1995, is known by many at Duke for the clinical innovations he initiated here. To celebrate Dr. Greenfield and his contributions to the Department and Duke Health, the Department of Medicine will hold a special Medicine Grand Rounds on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center for Health Education.

Funding opp: Bass Connections Project Proposals
Bass Connections is now accepting proposals for 2018-19 project teams. The program supports year-long team-based research projects that engage faculty, undergraduates, and graduate/professional students in interdisciplinary exploration of major societal challenges. Deadline for applications is Nov. 3, 2017.

The Duke Division of Infectious Diseases will hold its 40th Anniversary Symposium Oct. 20-21, 2017 in 131 Hanes House.
Registration for SoM K Club and Path to Independence Now Open
Registration is now open for K Club and Path to Independence grant writing programs, preparing investigators for an February 2018 NIH deadline. Application is due Friday, Sept. 29.
