The School of Medicine and the Office for Physician-Scientist Development (OPSD) are pleased to announce the annual RFP for the Duke Physician-Scientist “Strong Start” Award. The application deadline has been extended to Feb. 5, 2020.

Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the department, Aimee Zaas, MD, MHS, program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and David Simel, MD, vice chair for Veterans Affairs, have announced the Chief Residents for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Duke University $1.4 million over four years to train physician-scientists to address Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRDs).  The Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR) R38 was awarded to a team of Duke University School of Medicine faculty led by Anthony Viera, MD, MPH, chair and professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Heather Whitson, MD, MHS, associate professor of medicine (Geriatrics) and ophthalmology and director of the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development.

The Bass Connections team, Smart Toilet, is developing prototypes to enable the hands-free collection of waste that can be used for early disease detection and to test and monitor for infectious diseases
