Duke Department of Medicine fellowship programs offer outstanding medical training for physicians interested in focusing their skills in several subspecialties while trainee career development initiatives augment the learning experiences for all.

To better prepare second-year Duke medical students for residency — and the real world — the internal medicine component of the School of Medicine’s outPatient Integrated lONgitudinal ExpERience (PIONEER) curriculum integrates early exposure to the outpatient setting — where much of medicine happens —  with robust ambulatory training and faculty mentorship. The 16-week experience fosters high-quality mentoring opportunities for students while opening doors for workforce development and research collaboration with faculty preceptors.

The Department of Medicine recognizes 13 faculty members with 2025 Excellence in Education Awards in recognition of their outstanding work and dedication to the education of its fellows, residents and students.

Drs. James Abbruzzese, Pamela Douglas, Neil MacIntyre, and Diana McNeill have received the 2024 Department of Medicine Career Achievement Award in recognition of the extraordinary impact that their careers have had in one of the department’s three core missions: education, research, and clinical medicine. 

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) celebrated another successful fellowship match day.

The Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) has long been at the forefront of advancing medical knowledge and fostering collaboration through its Continuing Medical Education (CME) efforts. With a focus on two pivotal programs— Medicine Grand Rounds (MGR) and the Learning Education and Discussion Series (LEADS) —the department not only ensures the maintenance of professional licenses but also cultivates an environment of shared learning, innovation, and inspiration.  MGR: A Legacy of Innovation 

Afreen Shariff, MD, assistant professor in the division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition, has been selected by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) as a 2023 Innovator Award recipient for her work on the effectiveness of electronic consults for immune-related endocrine toxicities.

Academic medicine transformation leader Quinn Capers, IV, MD, the Rody P. Cox Professor of Internal Medicine (Cardiology) and associate dean for faculty at the University of Texas Southwest School of Medicine, will deliver the June 16 Greenfield lecture. The event will be held in person only beginning at 8 a.m. in Duke North, 2002. Breakfast will be served outside of the room starting at 7:45am.
