Two Department of Medicine faculty members, Sara Nystrom, MD, medical instructor in the division of Nephrology, and Aaron Vose, MD, medical instructor in the division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, have been selected to receive 2024 Physician-Scientist “Strong Start” awards.

Behavioral scientist, Gary Bennett, PhD, Dean of Duke University Trinity College of Arts & Sciences will deliver the Duke Department of Medicine’s 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Medicine Grand Rounds on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 8 a.m. in the Trent Semans Great Hall, and via Zoom.

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) celebrated another successful fellowship match day.

The Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) has long been at the forefront of advancing medical knowledge and fostering collaboration through its Continuing Medical Education (CME) efforts. With a focus on two pivotal programs— Medicine Grand Rounds (MGR) and the Learning Education and Discussion Series (LEADS) —the department not only ensures the maintenance of professional licenses but also cultivates an environment of shared learning, innovation, and inspiration. 

MGR: A Legacy of Innovation 

Christina Wyatt, MD, associate professor in the Division of Nephrology, and Keisha Bentley-Edwards, PhD, associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, received an award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a project entitled “Interventions that Address Structural Racism to Reduce Kidney Health Disparities, Research Coordinating Center.” 

The Department of Medicine (DOM) has a longstanding history of providing resources and opportunities to faculty at all levels who are on their journey towards building a rewarding career in academic medicine. One component of the department’s vision includes supporting the development of faculty through professional and leadership development programs.

The Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) and the Program for Women in Medicine (PWIM) will host a special Friday, October 20, 2023, Medicine Grand Rounds on Stepping In 4 Respect: Upstander Training Nationally and at Duke University. The event will take place in person at Trent Semans – Great Hall and virtually via Zoom.

It is with a heavy heart we share the news of the passing of Kimberley J. Evans, MD, Professor, Division of Nephrology, on August 23, 2023.

The Department of Medicine and the division of Nephrology are partnering with historically Black college and university (HBCU) North Carolina Central University (NCCU) College of Health and Sciences in a new program to give talented students an opportunity to develop mentor relationships and research/clinical exposure to fortify their early career development. 

Afreen Shariff, MD, assistant professor in the division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition, has been selected by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) as a 2023 Innovator Award recipient for her work on the effectiveness of electronic consults for immune-related endocrine toxicities.
