When senior resident Kate E. Lee, MD, MS, picked up a flute for the first time in third grade, she never imagined that one day as a physician she would use it as a therapeutic tool to soothe critically-ill ICU patients waiting for heart transplants.

Associate Professor of Medicine John K. Roberts, MD, brings a wealth of expertise, experience, and a deep dedication to teaching to his new role as director of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). Known for his resolve and talent for teaching and actively engaging with students and trainees in fostering their growth, Dr. Roberts is pedagogically motivated by the “awe-inspiring, transformative nature of medical education.”

Nelson J. Chao, MD, MBA, the Donald D. and Elizabeth G. Cooke Professor in Cancer Research, has been a transformative force in the Duke Department of Medicine (DOM) and the broader Duke institution. As the former chief of the Division of Hematological Malignancies and Cell Therapy at DOM, Dr. Chao has made significant contributions to stem cell biology, graft-versus-host disease prevention, and immune reconstitution.

As the 2024-2025 academic year gets underway and a new cohort of chief residents comes onboard, Department of Medicine (DOM) clinicians and faculty members may notice an extra fresh face among the team members as the Duke Internal Medicine Residency programs expands its number of chief residents from four to five.

The Duke University Department of Medicine (DOM) will expand from 12 to 13 divisions on September 1, 2024 with the creation of the new division of Hospital Medicine. The new division will include all hospitalists and nocturnists who oversee patients in the general medicine wards.  

Julius M. Wilder, MD, PhD, associate professor in the division of Gastroenterology and chair of the Department of Medicine Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEIAR) Committee, has been named as the next vice chair of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion effective July 1.

An elective track designed for subspecialty Medicine fellows who are passionate about health policy and advocacy, FAC allows fellows to engage directly with the legislative process and develop their own advocacy platforms. This is not just a program, but a platform for fellows to citizen lobby legislators in Washington, D.C., making a real impact in shaping health policy.
