The Duke Clinical Informatics Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited program training board-eligible physicians to become leaders at the intersection of medicine, technology, and innovation. Fellows develop deep expertise in health information technology, clinical decision support, data analytics, and health system transformation while building the leadership and communication skills to drive meaningful change at the institutional and national level.
The program uniquely positions graduates for clinical, administrative, and innovation leadership roles in academic medicine, health systems, industry, and government.
Program Leadership
Eugenia McPeek Hinz, MD — Program Director
Dr. McPeek Hinz is a clinical informaticist and health equity researcher at Duke University School of Medicine. Her work focuses on the intersection of clinical informatics, social drivers of health, and population health and includes large-scale implementation and evaluation of SDOH screening programs and Food is Medicine interventions across Duke Health. She brings a deep commitment to using health information technology as a tool for advancing equity supporting the Collaborative to Advance Clinical Health Equity (CACHE) at Duke. Dr. McPeek Hinz is passionate about training the next generation of physician informaticists to be both technically skilled and forward-minded leaders.
Eric Poon, MD — Associate Program Director
Dr. Poon is a nationally recognized leader in clinical informatics and health information technology at Duke University School of Medicine. His work spans EHR implementation, patient safety, interoperability, and the strategic application of health IT to improve care delivery. He brings extensive experience in informatics governance and academic medicine to his role as Associate Program Director.

Training Experience
Fellows rotate through core clinical informatics domains including:
- EHR implementation, optimization, and governance
- Clinical decision support design and evaluation
- Analytics and data science applications in clinical settings
- Population health informatics, telehealth, and patient-facing technologies
- Interoperability and data standards
- Quality improvement and patient safety
- Leadership, project management, and change management
Fellows are encouraged to maintain a 20% clinical practice throughout training and complete a scholarly activity project, with expectations to present at national conferences and submit work for publication.
